Eruera Sutherland - June 2012
I was doing some research awhile ago on weather Donald Sutherland fought in the Napoleonic Wars and although it has to be confirmed for definite, he was probably there when they beat Napoleon at Waterloo.
Below is a link listing the injured and dead who fought at Waterloo and a brief description of the end of the battle. The name Donald Sutherland is listed twice and John Sutherland.

WHERE DID SUTHERLAND FAMILY COME FROM?
As discussed with Eruera Sutherland via email dated: 12 March 2011
"You also mentioned Donald being from 'Dornoch', I don't think this is the case, although it is probable that he did live there. I think he was actually born in a town further north of there called 'Halkirk'. There are 2 Donald Sutherland's both born in 'Halkirk' a year apart in 1773 and 1774, both were in the 79th Cameron Highlanders Regiment, both would have been aged 31 & 32 when our Donald and Isabel married in 1805. There is also a 3rd Donald Sutherland born in 'Thurso' 1787, also in the 79th Cameron Highlanders. Although I doubt it is this Donald who is our ancestor as he would have been 18 in 1805 when our Donald and Isabel married."
